The payout for an each way multi is calculated differently to a standard multi bet.
The simplest way to explain it is by imagining that you are placing individual each way bets, one race at a time. As one each way bet wins, you place your winnings from that bet onto another each way bet. If you keep picking winners, the cycle continues. If one of your runners does not win or place, the multi is a loss.
Example 1
In the bet below, the selection running first (Captain Electric) is shown at the top. The $5 stake is split in half with $2.50 on the WIN and $2.50 on the PLACE.
The result of this first leg will determine what happens to the next leg.
If Captain Electric wins the race, the total amount won ($16.38) will be used as the new stake amount for the second leg of the multi (Chronic). Remember, this amount will be halved again ($8.19 on the WIN and $8.19 on the PLACE).
If Chronic doesn't win the race, but finishes second, the total amount won ($8.19 x $3.10 = $25.39) will be used as the new stake amount for the third leg of the multi.
This same process continues until the legs are completed, or a leg is lost completely (where a selection doesn't win or place).
Example 2
If you have $20 staked on a 3 leg each-way multi, the payout will be calculated like this:

The total payout from Leg 1 is our new stake size for Leg 2. |
